The American Idol auditions in Los Angeles left us with some lovely gems to digest. There were the good, the bad, and the ugly. Guest judge Olivia Newton John helped out Simon, Paula, and Randy. You might remember her from a little movie called Grease. After the usual clip about how awesome Los Angeles is, and how awesome Olivia is, we were off with the auditions.
First up was Martik Manoukian, aka Eccentric. He wants to do everything and is a Panther. He does the whole crawling, roaring, clawing thing. It was actually rather creepy. He threw down some book, then tossed aside his sunglasses. Then he took off his coat, then his shirt. He walked around and did his weird warmup thing. That was also creepy. After what felt like 20 minutes, Simon Cowell told him to get on with the singing. He "sang" his own song, which included the meowing and all that. Simon called him on the terrible build up, the outfit, the meowing, and his singing. Paula Abdul did like the roaring though. Martik said he would be as big as Michael Jackson, maybe bigger. He told Ryan Seacrest that when he performs people get tears. Ryan asked why (does anyone think Cowell is rubbing off on Ryan?), and Martik said it's because they're just so moved by his lyrics.
Sholandric Stallworth wanted to bring back the romance and love to music. He listens to singers who sing love songs, but they don't do it romantically. Julio Iglesias, Shol says, is romantic. He predicts that Paula and Randy Jackson will love him. After he sings, Simon calls hid hideous. Randy said something about 12 keys on a course that I didn't really get (did someone slip Paula's water over to Randy?). Olivia said that the pitch just wasn't on.
A montage of bad people (including a cow and a banana) leads to Marianna Riccio. Marianna has been singing since she was 4. Her mother supported her all the way. Her mother was one of Dean Martin's GoldDiggers. Unfortunately she didn't sing that good. Simon told her she sounded like Cher after she had been to the dentist. She gets on her knees and begs and pleads for another opportunity. Olivia tries to tell her there will be other opportunities. Paula tells her it wasn't the best audition. She leaves and Olivia says that was the hard part. Marianna comes back in with her mother, who says she is a talent perfomer who gets the audience going. Mom consoles her daughter that she can do other things. After they leave, Simon and Randy agree that the mom is hot.
That audition leads to another montage of people begging for another chance. Also looking for one last chance was Alaina Alexander, who has been a struggling artist in LA for 6 years. She decided not to do it anymore and go back to school. If this doesn't work out, this is her last shot. Simon stops her after she sings, and tells her he has heard enough. He thought she was really great. He likes her a lot. Randy likes her too, but says she was pitchy. Paula notes that this audition means a lot to Alaina. She gets a yes from all four judges.
Next is another person inspired by Taylor Hicks, Phuong Pham. She said that she has a lot in common with Taylor. Her mother told her she isn't pretty enough for TV (which I firmly disagree with). She wants to have the same passion as Taylor. She tells the judges that she abandoned her music to please her family. Simon tells her this is her moment and she sings and dances around to Dancing in the Street. Simon didn't know if the singing or the dancing was worse. She asks for another chance, to prove Simon wrong. She doesn't get it.
Brandon Rogers has been a background singer for four years. He has sang for Anastacia, and toured with Christina Aguilera (I see a really good finale if he makes it through). He sings "Always on my Mind" and has Paula and Olivia (and me) sighing at the end. Randy wonders if Simon sighed. Simon says that he can see this guy making the finals. He tells him he has a likeability, just like Simon. Olivia says she felt him in her heart.
Brian Miller was booted out last year but came back again this year for another shot. Simon tells him he was forgettable. The other three say yes, so Brian is on
Sherman Pore knew he was too old, but he wasn't there for himself. He came because he was motivated by his wife. She had cancer and her passing was eased by the process of getting a petition to have Sherman allowed to audition. Simon asks him why he is there. Sherman tells them about his wife. He was doing everything he could to keep her spirits up. She passed away two days before the audition. The judges all gasp, but Sherman says he doesn't want sympathy. Simon tells him he won't give him sympathy, they're going to let him sing. He sings a song for his beloved wife, and has Paula (and me) in tears at the end. At the end, Simon (who truly does have a heart of gold) tells Sherman it was very good. Simon shakes his hand, and Paula and Olivia hug him. Randy shaked his hand too. Then Sherman says he won.
All in all, day one was a success, as 21 people went on. The judges were happy about day one overall.
First up was a dating couple, Cavett Carr and Darold Gray. Darold has a grill, that Cavett (aka Sparkles) loves. They are soul mates they say, who met at a bus stop. Sparkles sings very badly, to Simon. Paula points out that Sparkles sang the whole song to Simon. Outside, Ryan is talking to Darold about Sparkles and how she is his soul mate and is loyal. Inside Sparkles is flirting with Simon, winking and trying to get on the show. Simon tells her that she is fabulous, but the singing was offputting. Then the guy is up, and Simon tells him about Sparkles flirting with him. Darold sings and it's not that good either. Simon asks if he and Sparkles sing together. He says they do all the time. Simon wonders if the police are called, and Darold says that it depends on what type of music they are playing.
Anthony Adams was a brief clip, singing badly. Simon told him not a note was in tune, and he agreed. Simon liked that.
Last up was Eric Mueller has been training for American idol for two years. He cut off his social life (which I can't imagine was that hard), and studied great singers like Robert Plant, Michael Jackson, and Aaron from Staind. He went on about taking what others have done and raising and reverberating it. I didn't really follow (he mumbles). He tells the judges he spent 4 or 5 hours a day teaching himself to sing. Then he sings, in a very high pitched voice. Simon asks him if he's serious. Eric asks if it was loud. Simon says it was high. Eric tries again with a lower tone. Simon tells him to go lower and Eric tries again. Randy tells him to let him do it in his own tone. Simon says he had no clue what Eric sang (apparently it was Hilary Duff and the fact that Randy knew that was scary). Simon told him it was attrocious. After Eric leaves, Simon reads the notes about the contestants and sees that Eric taught himself to sing with a DVD - from [b alt]Paula and Randy[/b alt]. The way Simon lit up was just priceless. He goes running after Eric, and Randy and Paula follow. Simon tries to get a word with Eric, but Randy and Paula won't allow it. Ryan is a bit confused, so Simon apparently shows him the notes, as you hear Ryan in the backgound with a loud "AHA!".
From Day two, 19 more make it, so that makes a grand total of 40 from LA.
Next week we are headed to Texas. Hopefully we'll end the torture and head to Hollywood after that.
(Quick correction- 21 plus 19 means 40 make it through from LA....)
1) They took FORTY from LA and they only showed TWO plus a "retread" making it through?!? They wasted our viewing time with these louts?!?
2) Sherman Pore was heart wrenching. It was nice getting to see him get his 15 minutes of fame and doing so as a tribute to his wife. Frankly, he sounded better than some of the others that they've previously shown making it through to Hollywood. He was the only high point of the night.
3) Was I the only one disappointed when Brandon Rogers started singing? No sighs here. His voice was good but not as extraordinary as I expected from someone who toured the world with Christina Aguilera for two years. IMO - the backup singer from Memphis (I've forgotten her name) sounded better than him during her audition.
4) What is it with crossovers from other shows as guest judges?!? First, we have Jewel, host of Nashville Star as a guest judge. They had Jewel as a guest judge in Minnesota but she lives in Texas in a small town about three hours from San Antonio! I guess the producers knew that they were going to air the Texas audition well after Nashville Star had launched...
Now, its Olivia Newton-John, who was recently on "You're the One that I Want - the Grease revival". When was the last time ONJ was on TV before this? I did love her shirt that read "it is what it is". Appropriate!
5) You mean we are stuck with one more week of auditions?!? AARRRGGGHHHH!! I think I'll have something else to do next Tuesday night!
6) Last year, they went to Austin and complained to high heavens about the lack of talent there...they took about 13 from Austin last year. This year, they held auditions in San Antonio, one hour away from Austin?!? WHY? If they wanted to do Texas, why not Houston or Dallas (which are both about 3-4 hours from Austin)?

I agree with you Shenova. But with ratings keep going up, so the AI Producers must think we want more William Hung wanna be's instead of the good singers that are headed for Hollywood.
KAT'S DEBUT CD:
OK, you all know how much I Luv McPheever. Let me tell you all how thoroughly disappointed I am with her debut CD. Kat's voice is drowned out by mechanical sounding synth-pop crap that K-Fed could've thrown together between burger flips (sounds like something witty Nicole would say if she didn't have morning sickness). I could find only one song that I like so far called "Home" but it's not quite the "power ballad" I was hoping for So save your $9.99 on iTunes and just spend 99 cents on "Home", you'll thank me. At least I still have my Carrie. And Mrs. Luv still has Taylor. And my sly 11-year old DaughterLuv (who named Katharine "Kat Pee" last season) still has Chris Daughtry.
Shenova (using her awesome math skills) pointed out:(Quick correction- 21 plus 19 means 40 make it through from LA....)
Thank you! Math has never been a strong point for me - at least not that whole adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing crap. Give me letters and equations, I can handle it. 75% off? heck yeah I can do shopping math! Normal boring 21+19... forget it. They invented calculators for people like me
I agree with the disappointment of the only ones with Golden tickets that were shown.

:(
I recorded Leno just to hear her sing her new song. It was
so bad I didn't finish the song! There are far too many hip-hop-pop synthetic idiot producers out there, what a waste for a fabulous talent, I hope she takes control of her career or she will be another very talented flop!
Everyone knows how much I like her but, the song sucked sucked sucked!!!! Will
I'm with you all, I'm tired of the pretenders!!!!!!
Let me tell you all how thoroughly disappointed I am with her debut CD.
I'm sorry this has happened to Kat Pee, but I am not surprised. As far as I am concerned, you can put most of the Idols/runner-ups first CDs in this category - Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, and even Bo. The only exception has been Carrie. I'll be shocked if Taylor's CD is anything worth listening. We've groused about 19 (mis)management here before and it doesn't seem to be improving. I was shocked to read that Jennifer Hudson has signed a deal with 19 Management to produce a CD this fall. With all of her current accolades, I would have expected her to have better record labels wooing her. Then again, Jennifer signed her deal just after Whitney returned to Clive and before she had won the Golden Globe/been nominated for an Oscar.
Look what Kelly did with "Breakaway" after she fired Simon Fuller. Hopefully, the other talented singers will find their niche as well...

Here's my theory, correct me if I'm wrong: Kelly Clarkson, managed to "Break Away" from AI's grip. So did Clay. So as time went on, the AI producers made contracts more restrictive (and even more restrictive as you progess) Wasn't the restrictive contract the main reason that Mario Vasquez dropped out? (Did 19 produce Chris Daughtry's CD???) So I'm guessing that if Jennifer Hudson desired to make a CD, she was required by her contract to work out a deal with AI/19.
I too cannot wait for the Hollywood part - these are dragging on way too long.
As for Kat's CD, I of course bought it on Day 1. Not enough pictures for my liking. I had the CD on at work the last 2 days, mostly as background music. No songs made me stop and take notice, other than Open Toes which makes me hit the next song button. (It's a really stupid song!)
I think they royally screwed up with the first single, so much so that she might not get a chance at a second single. I listen to all the Pop/Top 40 stations in DC and have yet to hear her song (has anyone?). But the real problem is that the song makes for a boring performance, and this comes from someone who loves to simply watch her. Since it's not a power ballad, it comes across very bland. On Regis, they showed part of a second song, Love Story, which she does a much better job performing. This should have been the first single.
However, I remember that my first listen to Carrie's CD had me similarly unmoved, and she's had 4 big hits from it so far, of which I've grown to really like 3. So maybe Kat's CD will grow on me as well.
Now I know this board is mostly anti-Kellie Pickler (yes, I have her CD as well - I'm all about the ladies), but at the risk of being booed, I want to give her props for a recent performance on the View. She sang a song she co-wrote about her Mom who left her. It was her, a piano, and maybe a guitar, with a slideshow of childhood pics on the screen behind her.
During the part about a prom dress, there was a pic of her at about that age. She must have caught a glimpse of it in a monitor somewhere, because she turned around to look, just as the pic was gone. She turned back around, covered her eyes, and fell silent for the next line of the song. She recovered, picked up the song, and sang the rest while coming very close to crying. She may not be the best singer, but she was fantastic on this song, even when starting to cry. It was the first time she performed this song, and it very well may have been her last, but she gained my respect with that performance.

you said it "Performed" she's a fake and you bought into it. Oh she happened to turn at the right moment?? She played you like a violin...don't you think she knows what pictures come up behind her...it was staged like all her boo hoo poor me sagas!
MomR, I just don't get you and the other fab women here who hate her so much, she is just not smart enough to be that good of a "fake". If she can act that good she should be on screen with Meryl and Cate. I have a great " folks who hate blonds" story that I will save for later, I do believe in teasing. Will
Kelly for President!!!! At least she is smarter that to get "saddled with" the acoustic crap that Kat Pee, got, ugh!!

Will dearest - it has nothing to do with blonde...it has to do with good looking and well built but STUPID. What is it with men that love well-built but completely non-threatening women? (Think - Marilyn Monroe)
And, to be honest, it initially doesn't have to do with the woman herself, it has to do with men who empower her. We hate that rational, more-or-less intelligent men turn into blithering idiots around women like this. We detest that you can only see her outward appearance and will accept and are enamored by this stupidity - which you would not tolerate for one second in a woman without looks.
When we begin to hate her is when she realizes that she has the power over men, and begins to act the part of someone who has power without the self-realization that she is still a mental midget. She begins to play manipulative power games that any woman with a quarter of a brain sees right through, but men, driven by testosterone, are too memorized by the package to properly analyze the contents.
We really don't hate her...she's too dumb to do anything but pity and certainly no one should have to go through her upbringing... but we really hate watching men turn into moronic pots of gushing hormones and being held in sway by her looks combined with a total lack of brains.

Shenvoa, dearest, quit holding back, let it out!!! LOL Will
Are you sure it's not that men fall in love with their eyes and women fall in love with their ears????? Women hold it against men,and men use it (women's need for bull) to get what they want from women.
Shenvoa, dearest, quit holding back, let it out!!!
You asked for it!!
You're probably right, it may go back to men falling in love with their eyes. Last year, someone (either Toadie or Nicole, I think, but I could be wrong) said to not watch AI - just listen to it without the picture. If you do that, you will begin to understand why women hated the "pickle" last year...she has a very limited voice, and when she talks, well, the phrase "white trash" comes to mind.
Shenova, you highlighted exactly why I hate Pickler. It wasn't that she was pretty or popular. It was that her personality comes mainly from her lack of intelligence and men's reactions to it. Her voice wasn't nearly as great as the throngs of (mostly male) fans said it was. As for the women who like her, they mostly fall into the older grandmother category who just sort of looks at Pickler as this sweet little retarded child that you just have to love.

I'll bite!!!!
My dear Curlio, the most handsome man in the world, and remember Dusty has run-off with a group of space aliens to be all that he can be. You and Mr. Handsome on a desert Island, would you like it better if he were just stupid, or not stupid but ignorant! Kelly is not Stupid! Stupid is not attractive!!! pla-eeze, child!!!! Will
I hope for KP’s sake that she is not THAT stupid, because to be very honest I think no one deserves the fate of Marilyn Monroe and the worst part is, Norma Jean was not stupid, she was just vulnerable. I really love MM – not for her body or image, but her sadness and her loneliness.
Shenova love, I respect you and I love your views, but the fact is not each male loves dumb females. I personally hate women with no substance and hence I love strong women like you and Curlio and Mom, who rocks the most, not to forget, me gal, et al, but at the same time, I agree with my Dear Friend Will that it is a little harsh to judge someone as clueless as KP!
KP might be many things, but fake is something that does not register with me and maybe that’s why many guys like her. They want someone like her to protect!
Isn’t it a little harsh to judge men as some chauvinist pigs, who just want an airhead? I mean come on, me gal is blonde, so is Curlio and though they both are nothing like KP, and still they are pretty women! I am sure that at least Dusty will agree with me.
My point is yes, KP might be clueless, but it is so judgemental to deem her as someone who is an act! By you own admission, she is too dumb, and so although I don’t love her, I sympathize with her plight as you.
And if it is an act, let’s be honest, men love such acts and the same applies to women, who fall for many tricks men play!
The fact is everyone plays a part, consciously or unconsciously, but at the end of it all, lets remember one thing, we all need a bit of illusion and in that vain, when women love someone like Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Ricky Martin, Constantine, etc for personal reasons, for men to love likes of KP is not wrong, its natural and I really don’t get the argument – KP did NOT win!
So please let’s focus on 2007! By discussing KP, we are all just enforcing the fact that she made an impact and in this day and age that’s what matters!
Will my dearest,
I really wish I knew some single woman, so I could fix you up! How about someone like Uttam? On second thoughts, she will eat you alive!
