Before the season started they said there would be no themes this year. So the theme this week was Motown and before the first contestant Ryan Seacrest gave the usual history of Motown. Something they do each year when they do a Motown week.
of the eleven contestants tonight it was up to Casey Abrams to kick off the first performance. He sang Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". It was a brilliant choice of song for him and he had a
great performance. Steven Tyler said he had perfect pitch and that he is a great entertainer. Jennifer said that there is no-one like him "out there" in the music world. Randy
agreed with Jennifer and said that Casey really is a true original.
Thia Megia was the first girl of the night singing "Heatwave" by Martha and the vandellas. Her voice sounded good, but the whole performance felt like a cheap cover of the
original. She didn't bring anything original or unique to the song. At least she didn't do another ballad. Jennifer Lopez said that it was great to see her let loose but that
she has to learn to connect more with the lyrics. Randy said she took a chance and that she can really sing. Steven said she took a step out of her usual performances and that
it was good!
I expected more from Jacob Lusk doing of the rendition of Marvin Gaye and Tammi terrell's "You're All I Need". It was still a good performance though and he hit some really
good big notes and he consdtrained going on his usual runs with his voice. Randy Jackson said it was the best performance from him on the idol stage and that there was nothing
wrong with the performance. Steven said he held back and that that made the performance beautiful. Jennifer said that she moved her and that it was amazing.
Lauren Alaina decided to sing "You Keep Me Hanging" by the Supremes. She had her usual country twang in her voice but they didn't change anything musically with the instruments which made the whole performance just sounding "odd" to me. Steven Tyler called the performance beautiful, Jennifer said that she looked amazing and that she loved the attitude in the performance. Randy said that it is clear that she is ready to compete.
The next contestant was Stefano Langone. He was singing Lionel Richie's "Hello". To me he sounded sharp and off-key on several spots. Jennifer said that she felt that the emotion was coming from wanting to do well and not from his heart breaking. Randy agreed that he should connect with the song more and that it was missing but that he sounded good. Steven said that Stefano has a beautiful voice.
Haley Reinhart would perform "You really Got A Hold On Me" by Smokey Robinson. She has a really good voice, but she moved around the stage a bit awkward and it made the performance feel fake to me. Randy said that she started off a bit rough but that she pulled it together. Steven said it was beautiful and Jennifer said that she has an effortless control over her voice.
Low Voiced Scotty McCreery decided to sing "For Once In My Life" by Stevie Wonders. He had a great performance and hit all the correct notes and by changing the feel of the song to country it really fit his voice and made the song his own. Steven Tyler used his favorite word of the night: Beautiful. jennifer said it was a great version but that it was not his strongest performance. Randy said that he's clearly taking chances and that with his low voice he's the young lady killer.
The eight contestant to take the stage was Pia Toscano. She sang "Stevie Woner's "All In Love Is Fair". SHe was off key at several spots and made her performance really sleep inducing. jennifer said it had amazing vocals but that she didn't own the stage. Randy said that she hit all notes head on, but that she really shouldn't do ballads time after time. Steven said out of all contestant that she is the closest to a star in the competition.
Front runner Paul McDonald was next and he sang "Tracks Of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. he changed the song to fit his voice and style, which was great. The bad side was that he was smiling while singing this song. Which was a bit odd considering the lyrics. Randy Jackson said that he's very unique and that the tender singing at the end was fantastic. Steven said that hsi voice is very different but that the performance was just great! Jennifer said that he is the most seasoned performer and that he already has the complete package and that all he needs is a good producer to make a great album.
The second to the last performer was Naima Adedapo. She sang Martha Reeves and the Vandellas' "Dancing In The Street" She was a bit off key at several spots and her overal performance was just lackluster to me. Steven said that we saw the whole package from her. Jennifer said that she was an exciting performer and that she was the first contestant of the night that gave her goosebumps. Randy said that everything about the performance was very smart.
The last performer of the night was James Durbin. He sang "Living For The City" by Stevie Wonder. His whole performance felt like a Adam Lambert performance. It was a great performance despite of him being a little off-key at times. Jennifer said that he is really serious business and that she was speechless. Randy said that he was a bit rough at the start but became unbelievably good at the end. Steven said sometimes it takes a bit crazy to make something great and that he nailed it this time.
My guess is that the bottom three this week will yet again consist out of all girls.
I think the guys are really strong this year. I'm not a big country fan, but Scotty just amazes me with that low, low voice! I love Paul and Casey's unusual sound and Jacob does remind me of Luther Vandross. Pia is the only real stand out for me in the girls, although I thought her song choice wasn't great last night.
I think the bottom three will also be girls.
If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!
I agree with you that the bottom three would be all girls again (and I hope it is). The guys are so much better, except for Pia of course. I like Casey and Scotty.
I really love the show this year! I was worried I wouldn't like it with Simon gone, but Jennifer and Steven are great!!
My fav guys are Casey, James, Scotty and Jacob.
My fav girls are Lauren and Pia.
I was very shocked when Casey would have been voted off and of course the judges would use the save!!
I'm relieved that Thia and Naima were voted off instead.
